This week, Heligan class had an opportunity to visit RSCPA Cornwall Home - RSPCA Cornwall Branch to develop a greater understanding about Animal Care and Welfare as part of FHHS Post 16 - Careers Information, Advice, and Guidance. The RSPCA Education team, provide young people in Cornwall with vital skills to ensure the next generation acts with kindness and compassion towards animals.
During our visit to the centre, we were shown both the cattery and the dog preparation rooms, where we learned how the care of animals is organised. This included seeing the feeding stations, reviewing the animals’ dietary and medical profiles, and understanding their grooming routines. We were also lucky enough to meet some kittens and handle them to support their socialisation before they are ready for rehoming.
Staff explained the wide range of circumstances that can lead cats and dogs to find themselves at the RSPCA, and highlighted the personal qualities needed to work effectively with both animals and people - particularly the importance of communicating in a calm, confident, and kind manner. We also learned that working with dogs requires demonstrating confidence, especially when walking them as part of their daily exercise and overall well‑being.
