At Fountain Head House School, we strongly believe in the importance of encouraging children to read for pleasure. Reading helps pupils to build vocabulary, develop general knowledge and grow in empathy, contributing to success across all subjects. When children are excited about books, they are far more likely to develop a lifelong love of reading. Our approach is always person-centred, ensuring reading is accessible for every child.
We are proud of our welcoming and well-resourced school library, which pupils visit weekly. It offers a wide range of books including fiction, non-fiction, magazines and comics, giving every child the chance to find something they would enjoy reading. Our Phonics and Reading Instructor, Kate Thompson, plays a key role in making reading accessible and enjoyable for all. Reading is part of everyday school life, and the library provides a calm and welcoming space where pupils can relax, chat and enjoy books at their own pace. In addition to our physical library, our online Oxford Owl e-library offers a fantastic range of e-books to support all stages of reading, giving pupils the opportunity to enjoy books at school and at home.
We also encourage families to make use of local libraries as part of reading at home. Libraries such as Saltash Library Hub offer a wonderful range of books and resources, giving children the opportunity to explore new authors and topics alongside their families.
As a school, we remain committed to motivating both pupils and staff to read for pleasure. Families play an important role too. Taking time to read with your child, even after they become independent readers, can make a big difference.
If you would like to share photos of you and your children enjoying reading at home, please post them on Instagram or Facebook using @FHHSreads. We love seeing our reading community grow!
