This term, as part of our Beyond the Classroom programme, the pupils at Fountain Head House School have been developing practical life skills through outdoor learning. One of the lessons focused on how to safely build and extinguish small fires.
The pupils learned how to:
✅Have a bucket of water available to put the fire out.
✅Clear the ground of debris.
✅Check your fire is in a suitable location.
✅Put a boundary around your fire.
✅Lay a raft of sticks at bottom.
✅Make a teepee style fire.
✅Have a small tinder to ignite.
✅Use the fire steel as a heat source.
We have also talked about the Fire Triangle, the three essential elements needed for a fire to burn: heat, oxygen, and fuel. This lesson gave the pupils an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of safety and science, while also building important skills, such as teamwork, communication, and confidence in an outdoor setting. Well done everyone!
